Quick copyright story for my musician and music-industry friends:
NIN released 'Ghosts I-IV' under a Creative Commons non-commercial share-alike license which means we can sample the tracks for free but can't sell the tracks or make any money in any way from them. Kio, a beat producer sampled them and illegally sold the beat to Lil Nas X, who made the track 'Old Town Road'.
Lil Nas X did the right thing and entered an agreement with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who produced Ghosts I-IV to share authorship of the tracks (it's not clear how involved the Columbia Records/Sony Ent. legal teams were) - 'Old Town Road' is now #1 on the Billboard Top 100, meaning it's NIN's first #1 song.
There's a few lessons and ideas to reflect on in this if you're serious about working in and thriving in the music-industry. Also, Billy Ray Cyrus is involved in the remix. A Country-Trap song featuring Billy Ray Cyrus and authored by Lil Nas X, Trent Reznor, and Atticus Ross is number one - this is music today, let that set in. :-D
